
Dr. Thomas E. Dudney, of Greystone Smile Design, recently completed the requirements for Diplomate status in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry.
In the early 1990’s, as a result of the rapid growth in aesthetic dentistry, it was determined that closer cooperation among the various dental organizations and the academic institutions was imperative and that universal professional standards should be developed. The Aesthetic Educational Parameters was assembled to evaluate the need for these standards. A committee was formed in January, 1993 consisting of 17 highly recognized individuals across a wide gamut of the aesthetic dental community. From the results of the committee’s work the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry was formed.
The mission of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry shall be to:
• Establish and promote standards of care in aesthetic dentistry
• Define a universally acceptable criteria for accomplished aesthetic dentists to demonstrate in an objective manner the achievements of their technical expertise
• Recognize those individuals who have fulfilled the established criteria in aesthetic dentistry
• Provide a registry of those persons who have fulfilled the established criteria in aesthetic dentistry
The requirements for achieving Diplomate status in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry are: 1) 250 hours of continuing education in aesthetic dentistry, 2) successful passage of an approximately 500 question written examination on all phases of aesthetic dentistry, and 3) submission of 10 cases that demonstrate clinical mastery of the disciplines of aesthetic dentistry.
To date approximately 50 individuals have been inducted into the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry. They represent the finest in aesthetic dentistry and include many of the leaders in the field. They are among the top spokespersons for the profession.
