Dr. Trenton H. Buchanan was recognized as a Fellow in the Academy of General Dentistry at the convocation ceremony in New Orleans on July 10, 2010. The Fellowship designation is one of the most rigorous continuing dental education programs today. A general dentist who is a “Fellow” in the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) has been recognized by other general dentists as a leader and example to other dentists of the importance of quality continuing dental education to patient care.

To earn a Fellowship Award, a dentist must earn a minimum of 500 approved continuing dental education credits and pass a comprehensive 400-question examination. The dentist is required to be an AGD member for three continuous years. While attaining Fellowship is a challenge, it allows dentists to remain current with what is new in dentistry, and to incorporate the latest research techniques into their practices.

Fellows of the AGD follow a lifelong pursuit of continuing education to provide the highest quality of dental care to patients. The award symbolizes the professional responsibility of general dentists to remain current in their profession and reminds each member of the dental profession to continue to learn new techniques for their dental practice. These are awards, however, and should not be confused with post-graduate degrees or certification. Every dentist who applies for the Fellowship Award has their application reviewed by the AGD Council on Dental Education to assure that the high standards of the AGD are met.

Trent H. Buchanan, D.M.D., of Greystone Smile Design, recently completed the requirements for the prestigious Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry and will be recognized for his accomplishments at the July 2010 meeting in New Orleans.

Requirements consist of:

- Completion of 500 hours of approved dental continuing education credit.

- Successful completion of the Fellowship Examination. The exam includes material from all dental disciplines and strongly emphasizes clinical applications of accepted dental knowledge, techniques, and procedures.

The mission of the Academy of General Dentistry is to serve the needs and represent the interest of general dentists, to promote the oral health of the public, and to foster continued proficiency of general dentists through quality continuing dental education in order to better serve the public.

Dr. Trent Buchanan, of Greystone Smile Design, recently attended Dental Education Laboratories in Santa Barbara, CA for The Art of Endodontics two-day hands-on laboratory course.

This demanding seminar featured the newest technology and techniques in root canal treatment. The course is taught by renowned Endodontist L. Stephen Buchanan, DDS (no relation), who lectures domestically and internationally on Endodontic Innovations and Procedures.

Dr. Trent Buchanan – Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry – March/April ‘08

Dr. Trent Buchanan was recently published in General Dentistry, a premier peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Published bi-monthly, it presents the latest advances in science, pharmacology, dental materials, and technology.

Dr. Buchanan teamed up with Dr. Paul D. Eleazer, chair of the UAB Department of Endodontics, and Dr. Bradley S. Alley, currently an Endodontist in Huntsville, AL. The article was entitled “Comparison of the Success of Root Canal Therapy in HIV/AIDS Patients and Non-Infected Controls.” Results showed no correlation between suppressed immune function and root canal success.
