Greystone Smile Design teamed up with the Vestavia Hills Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon cutting on April 6th. Several staff members, city representatives, and chamber ambassadors were present, and the event was catered by Bob Sykes BBQ.

Dr. Thomas E. Dudney, of Greystone Smile Design, recently completed the requirements for Diplomate status in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry.

In the early 1990’s, as a result of the rapid growth in aesthetic dentistry, it was determined that closer cooperation among the various dental organizations and the academic institutions was imperative and that universal professional standards should be developed. The Aesthetic Educational Parameters was assembled to evaluate the need for these standards. A committee was formed in January, 1993 consisting of 17 highly recognized individuals across a wide gamut of the aesthetic dental community. From the results of the committee’s work the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry was formed.

The mission of the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry shall be to:

• Establish and promote standards of care in aesthetic dentistry

• Define a universally acceptable criteria for accomplished aesthetic dentists to demonstrate in an objective manner the achievements of their technical expertise

• Recognize those individuals who have fulfilled the established criteria in aesthetic dentistry

• Provide a registry of those persons who have fulfilled the established criteria in aesthetic dentistry

The requirements for achieving Diplomate status in the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry are: 1) 250 hours of continuing education in aesthetic dentistry, 2) successful passage of an approximately 500 question written examination on all phases of aesthetic dentistry, and 3) submission of 10 cases that demonstrate clinical mastery of the disciplines of aesthetic dentistry.

To date approximately 50 individuals have been inducted into the American Board of Aesthetic Dentistry. They represent the finest in aesthetic dentistry and include many of the leaders in the field. They are among the top spokespersons for the profession.

Dr. Trent Buchanan To Receive FAGD Award

Trent H. Buchanan, D.M.D., of Greystone Smile Design, recently completed the requirements for the prestigious Fellowship Award from the Academy of General Dentistry and will be recognized for his accomplishments at the July 2010 meeting in New Orleans.

Requirements consist of:

- Completion of 500 hours of approved dental continuing education credit.

- Successful completion of the Fellowship Examination. The exam includes material from all dental disciplines and strongly emphasizes clinical applications of accepted dental knowledge, techniques, and procedures.

The mission of the Academy of General Dentistry is to serve the needs and represent the interest of general dentists, to promote the oral health of the public, and to foster continued proficiency of general dentists through quality continuing dental education in order to better serve the public.

In cases when patients present with severe tooth wear, it is incumbent upon the clinician to determine the etiology of the wear prior to initiating restorative treatment. The nature of a patient’s particular type of tooth wear could adversely affect the long-term success of any proposed restorative treatment plan. Dr. Trent Buchanan – Journal of the Academy of General Dentistry – March/April ‘08

Dr. Trent Buchanan was recently published in General Dentistry, a premier peer-reviewed journal of the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). Published bi-monthly, it presents the latest advances in science, pharmacology, dental materials, and technology.

Dr. Buchanan teamed up with Dr. Paul D. Eleazer, chair of the UAB Department of Endodontics, and Dr. Bradley S. Alley, currently an Endodontist in Huntsville, AL. The article was entitled “Comparison of the Success of Root Canal Therapy in HIV/AIDS Patients and Non-Infected Controls.” Results showed no correlation between suppressed immune function and root canal success.

A team of architects, landscape architects, an arborist and contractors collaborated to save the century-old oak tree near the new home of Dr. William Hedden’s plastic surgery center and spa facility in Greystone.
